Great Success at Cork Sports! share
Well done to all the boys and girls who represented SNCN at the Cork Sports in CIT on the 10th June. The competition was extremely tough but there was a tremendous effort made by all of the athletes. Many came away with prizes and we even home with a county champion!! Queen Tanimowo (fifth class) is the under 11 county champion for 2015!!
Light and Materials share
Over the last few weeks in our class we’ve been talking about light. Last week we did and experiment to see if light travels through materials. We discovered that materials that let all the light through are transparent, materials that let some light through are translucent, and materials that let no light through are opaque.
Cork Pops share
On Wednesday the 5th November me and my class went to the Cork Pops concert. In the morning we came into school and did our morning work. After we had our lunch. A few minutes later we hopped on the bus – my partner was Julie. It was so much fun. We sang lots of songs!
A few minutes later we got there. It was on in City Hall. The orchestra played lots of songs. A few of them were: Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Let it go, and my favourite – Happy. There were lots of instruments as well, like violins, drums, trumpets, clarinets, flutes and cellos.
At the end the youth band came on. Soon afterwards we went back on the bus. On the bus we did soooo much singing! Soon we arrived back at school and it was home time!

Grandparents' Day share
Grandparents’ Day by David Pierce
On February the thirteenth it was Grandparents’ Day! Before we went to all our Grannies and Granddads we practiced our songs. We did Connected and /Céad Míle Fáilte Romhat. When we went to the halla to sing my granny was smiling. Then I shared memories with the people there. My friend James had a granny but she couldn’t come so James went with me. My granny went down to my class and saw my work and saw James’ work. Then we went back down to the halla. My granny had tea and scones and I had half a biscuit. Then my granny went home but I gave her a big hug before she went!
Grandparents’ Day by Alex O’Sullivan Cronin
On Thursday February the 13th we had Grandparents’ Day. It was a lot of fun we did lots of stuff. We sang songs, we went to our classroom and showed our grandparents our classroom. Then we went back to the hall and ate biscuits and scones and drank tea. We were chatting to our grandparents. I hope all the grandparents had lots of fun .We also did some prayers. We practised for two days. We were all very excited. We said something that we were thankful for from our grandparents .We wrote about them. We will always cherish this moment from Grandparents Day.
Here are some more photos from Grandparents’ Day:
Potato Clock! share
Last month we did an experiment on making a clock from potato batteries.
These are the things we needed:
2 Copper and Zinc plates , connecting wire, digital clock with wires , transparent tape and 2 potatoes.
This is how we did it:
We assembled a ‘connection pair’ by connecting the pair of Copper and Zinc plates through the hole on the plate. Gently we twisted the wire to secure it to the plate. We covered and secured the connection with the adhesive tape.
Next we connected the black wire from the LCD clock to one of the Zinc plates. Then we connected the red wire from the LCD clock to a piece of Copper plate. Now all the components were connected. We inserted the Copper and Zinc plates into the potatoes , taking care that the metal plates didn’t touch each other.
SETTING THE CLOCK
When all the metal plates were first inserted into the potatoes , the LED screen showed a static display of “12:00“.We pressed A [top button] once and the clock started working. We saw the 2 dots in the middle flashing .We pressed B [bottom button] twice to obtain the set month mode , we pressed A to adjust the right month. We pressed B to confirm and the display switched to the day mode . We pressed A to adjust to the right day. We pressed B to confirm and switched to set hour mode. We pressed A to adjust to the right hour. We pressed B to confirm and switched to set minute mode . We pressed A to adjust to the right minute and pressed B to confirm this. After the minute was confirmed , we pressed A once . The set time was displayed.
Our potato battery lasted for a day or so but then the clock began to slow down. The next time we do this experiment we will try other foods like lemons or oranges.
